Double

Double is an exhibition which marks the culmination of various artistic questions, combining cultural memory with the complexity of today’s world, which have populated Zakaria Ramhani’s imagination in recent years. Through large formats and increasingly assertive visual gestures, the artist explores different proposals around the question of the double. Duality, even multiplicity of identity, has always been at the heart of his practice where he paints faces, generally his own, which intertwine and highlight this Other who is present in each of us. This exhibition marks a milestone in the artist’s approach, because he draws his inspiration exclusively from archive images and icons, often having
an ironic connotation, which nourishes our collective imagination. Calligraphy, a true signature motif at Ramhani, takes on the role here of a simple pictorial and ornamental gesture, the writing no longer being legible, and is paradoxically placed entirely at the service of figuration….
